Classic/Antique Car Repair: carburetor, gp sorenson, carter carburetor

Question
I have a 1965 plymouth Fury with a 318 2 barrel Carter carburetor, and i was told the accelerator pump needs to be replaced.I bought a GP Sorenson rebuild kit(#96-223A). The directions say the pump piston must be lightly lubricated with clean engine oil, then flared before installation. What does flared mean, how do you do it ,and how much are you supposed to do it? Thanks, Bill

Answer
I presume that it is a leather cup with these instructions.

You are just trying to limber it up and make it pliable. Flaring is a gentle thing. It will pretty well do its thing once installed. Just make sure it is more than cylindrical, slightly pointing out as you go down the cup. We are talking like 1/16 of an inch maybe.

Don't get too hung up on this, it will be fine.
