Classic/Antique Car Repair: 49 Packard Shift Problem, shaft assembly, u bolt

Question
Brad -  I exceeded my allotment of followups so I need to ask a new question.  I removed the two linkage turnbuckles and can now easily shift through the six detent positions by moving the idler links.  So, you were right-on with your original diagnosis of bad shaft levers.  I removed the U-bolt that holds the shaft assembly to the steering gear housing, but am unable to move the bottom end of the shaft assembly enough to clear the steering gear box in order to pull the shaft levers off (which are still wed to each other as a unit).  So, it looks like I'm going to have to pull the shaft partially out the top at least five inches to get the shaft levers off.  Do you agree?  If so, how big a job is it?  Can I open up the top sufficiently to pull the shaft out by removing the horn button?  If no, what does needs to be done?  Thanks again for all your help...,      Jere Brunton

Answer
Well I am glad that we are making progress. However, I think that the job is going to get a little complicated from here on out. If I were doing the job I would remove the horn button and then the big nut on the top of the steering column. Then remove the steering wheel and this is going to require a puller. Try your local tool rental place. Then there is a plate on the floor board around the steering column that will need to be removed. Then take off all the brackets holding the column to the dash and the U bolt holding the bottom end of the tube (outer column) from the steering box. You should then be able to slide the column and shift tube out of the car over the steering shaft. Now with the assembly on the bench overhaul the bottom end of the shift tube and reinstall. Not really an easy or fun job. Keep me posted.
