Classic/Antique Car Repair: 65 mustang transmission problem, dogears, transmission problem

Question
I have a 65 mustang with a 6 cylinder, 3 speed manual transmission (first gear is not synchronized).  Last year I had a new clutch put in which ultimately resulted in a new trans housing, some new bearings etc.  I also had the shifter rebuilt (standard mustang type) after the problem described below started to occur.  Now at times it does not want to come out of 1st.  I have to move the shifter back into first and then it may come out and into 2nd.  I also found that if I move the shifter hard to the left when it is in the "neutral" position - horizontal on the H, it will make a 'click' and then be freed up to go into second.  When the transmission is stuck and the shifter is in between 1st and second there is a noise - hard to describe, maybe a low growl.

I have tried to figure out what makes this happen, hard acceleration but unable to determine any commonality.  It did seem like this would occur during the first couple of shifts after a cold start, but then it started happening at other times.  From a frequency point, it may happen once every other time that I drive it.

Any suggestions?

Answer
Sounds like your dog ears are wallering and starting to misalign. Lay under the car and have someone move the shifter and watch the dogears for slop. I give this answedr probably three times a day. It is the most common problem on shifters. Just because it was repaired it is more likely that this is the problem than not.
