Question
QUESTION: Hi, MY CAR WILL START AND IDLE WITH NO PROBLEM AFTER A FEW MINUTES IT STARTS TO DIE, GIVE IT MORE GAS AND IT WILL SOMETIMES RESPOND OR JUST QUIT. HAVE IN STALLED NEW CARB, FUELPUMP, FUEL LINES. ANY THOUGHTS? THANKS,

ANSWER: Is the car stock or has it been modified?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Yes,it is stock just replaced with orginal parts.
Also I only replaced the fuel line from the Pump to the Carb. Yesterday thought it could be a electric choke problem but seems to be working correctly. I started the car up yesterday no problems sounded perfit, Then let it idle and warm for a couple minutes then starting dyeing until it shut off. I then restarted it with a little affort and ran ok until dyed. Fuel tank line issues?, Timing?
Hope this will shine some light.

Thanks, Dirk

Answer
Ok, that is good because in a modified car there is just too much that has been altered to try to diagnose in this manner. Several things come to mind. Does the exhaust smoke get black when the car is in the process of dying? If this is happening the problem could be in the carburetor such as a bad inlet needle valve or a sinking float causing the engine to flood. You can check this by pulling a plug right after the engine has died. If it is wet with fuel, the problem is in the carburetor. You can see if the electric choke is working because it should be opening as the car warms up. If the choke remains closed you have found your problem. If you suspect the fuel pump or lines to the tank you can test all of this. I would like to see you take a fuel pressure, vacuum, and volume test. Most parts houses sell a combination vacuum/fuel pressure tester. The first test is to hook the gage up to the fuel line once you have removed the fuel line from the carburetor. The pressure should be 5 or so pounds. Then with the fuel line still disconnected kill the ignition system so that the coil will not produce a spark. Now connect a piece of flexible fuel line to the line that you disconnected from the carburetor and aim it into a quart container. Crank the engine and you should have at least a pint of fuel in 30 seconds. Then disconnect the fuel line at the fuel tank and connect the vacuum gage to the line that goes to the front of the car. Crank the engine and let is start if it will. The vacuum gage should read at least 11 inches of vacuum. And hold the vacuum for a few minutes. Good Luck
