Classic/Antique Car Repair: !958 Ford dash lights, fuse holder, dash lights

Question
QUESTION: The dash lights don't work on my 1958 Ford Skyliner. The headlights, parking lights, tail lights etc. all work. I know that the headlight switch has two circuit breakers that protect the headlights and the dash lights. It's also supposed to have a fuse that protects the interior lights. They don't work either. I don't even see the place for the fuse on my switch. It's supposed to be on the back of the switch. My question is, is the headlight switch the problem or should I be looking elsewhere? If so what else could be the problem?
Thanks in advance for your help,
Vic

ANSWER: Have the lights worked since you have owned the car? If not it could be that someone cobbled the wrong switch into the car. Let me know if the lights ever worked and we will go from there.

QUESTION: Thanks for responding so quickly. I'm not sure if they worked when I got the car. I've only had it a little over a year and the first few months were spent in the shop due to gas tank problems. When I got the car back it was winter and I didn't drive at night time until this spring. My assumption is that they didn't work when I purchased it.

Thanks,

Vic

ANSWER: Vic, it sure sounds like the wrong switch is in the car. Does the wiring look like it has been tampered with? And yes there should be a fuse holder on the original switch. Let me know.

QUESTION: Brad,
Thanks, I guess I'll try to take the switch out to investigate further. I'm not sure when i'll get a chance to do that. I'll let you know when I do.

Answer
I will be waiting to hear what you found. The dash lights should be connected to the rheostat that is closest to the dash board. It gets fed when the headlight switch is in either the parking light mode or the headlight mode. The switch knob can be turned turning the rheostat to cause the dash lights to dim or be bright. And all the way counter clockwise should turn on the dome light and the foot well lights if the car has them.
