Classic/Antique Car Repair: car battery, 12 volt systems, sony beta

Question
Does a 1940 Ford Sedan have positive or negative ground?

Answer
All Fords were positive ground up to 1955 or so.   Most cars were positive ground in those years, because it is a better design.

Only GM went the wrong way, and because they have so much clout, the rest of the industry finally gave in and converted to Negative ground, mostly at the same time they switched to 12 volt systems.

It's like the situation whith video tape back in the 70s - the Sony Beta system was MUCH better, but the VHS system brought out by RCA had more backing in the USA- and the whole industry went the wrong way.  The same thing happened with Color TV in the 50s (RCA again) and is happening now with HDTV - there's a much better system out there, but we are never going to see it!
