Classic/Antique Car Repair: choke thingee, mid sixties, american ford

Hi, I know nothing about cars but have recently got an automatic 75 ford escort. It starts up fine but as soon as I put it in gear it stalls. I've tried having the choke pulled out different amounts but nothing seems to work. The battery is new and its just been tuned so I'm clueless. Help!

There is a problem with the question. American Ford escorts did not appear on the market until the 1981 Model year. Escort was a name plate used by Ford of Europe from the mid sixties to 1981 or later. Please clarify the make, model and year, then we can proceed with a diagnosis.
