Classic/Antique Car Repair: fuel gauge question, chevrolet belair, studebaker champion

Question
I have a 1950 Studebaker Champion. I put in it a new gas tank with a new sending unit for a Chevrolet Belair 1956.
I am looking for a fuel gauge that works with this new set up. I have 6 volt system in my car. So, I need a 6 volt gauge.
Can I use the chevrolet Belair 1956  12 volt fuel gauge in my 6 volt system? Do you have any suggestions to hook up a fuel gauge and what kind?
Thanks
John

Answer
As I say in my intro on this site, I don't advise on any sort of modifications - most of them turn out to be a mistake. I won't ask why you did this, but I will try to answer your question.  The existing Studebaker fuel gauge dash unit should work with the Chevrolet sender - electrically they are so close as to not make a difference.

I may have mis-understood your question - if you were thinking about installing the Chevrolet dash unit in your Studebaker dash cluster - I think you are going to wind up with a messy looking dash - and I don't see any reason to do that.   If you want to do that, it will probably work OK - as long as you install the proper 12 volt instrument voltage regulator (NAPA store part IR9).

Why not have the Studebaker tank repaired and use that, I wonder?
