Classic/Antique Car Repair: Brake Light 1967 Lincoln Continental Convertible 462- 4 Barrel, brake cables, brake valve

Question
How do you reset the brake light so that it will go off ?

Answer
I assume that you are talking about the Brake light on the dash not the stop lights on the rear of the car. On a 1967 the brake light is most likely on because the emergency brake pedal is not coming back all the way to shut off the light. This could be caused by a misadjusted e brake cable or the e brake cables are beginning to hang up and not retract fully. The easiest way to check this is to lift up on the e brake pedal with your toe and see if the light goes off. If it does the problem is in the cables or adjustment. If it does not then the switch may be defective and needs to be replaced. If the light is one because of the centering of the brake valve, then carefully bleeding of the brakes will cause the valve to seek center and turn the warning light off.
