Classic/Antique Car Repair: 72 pontiac catalina, pontiac catalina, oil light

Question
QUESTION: This is the first car I have purchased and I have only had it for about a week.
While accelerating the  car lost power the oil light came on and the steering
locked. This has happened only twice and my mechanic can find nothing wrong.
What  are we missing?

ANSWER: Does the engine die or not? If so, does it restart right away?

If the car does not die, how do you preceed from this point?

QUESTION: On my '72 catalina the engine occasionally dies while accelerating. The car  can
immediately restart. Any suggestions as possible points of interest.

Answer
The car dying explains the oil light and the steering locking.

It sounds like the accelerator pump in the carb has gone out. It is a very inexpensive part and your mechanic should have caught it right away.

You can remove it and visually inspect it for condition, or just replace it (less than $5)  Also check the ball underneath for free movement.
