Classic/Antique Car Repair: cone clutch, cone clutch, c37

Question
Brad:

What a great service!

My question is this: I have a 1915 Buick C37 and I', attempting to separate the engine from the transmission.  The leather faced cone clutch appears to be holding things together, yet I don't see how.

The clutch worked fine before I started to work on the engine (it needs new babbitt so I know it's not broken and jammed because of that.

I've taken off all the bellhousing bolts but the best I can get is about 3/4" gap between the bellhousing and the back of the engine block.

What am I missing?  I've got 40 years of playing with cars and am mechanically inclined for sure, but this one has me stumped.

Any help would be tremendous as I am very frustrated.

Thanks Brad!

Mike

Answer
Boy Mike I hate to cry uncle, but on this one you have me stumped. My guess that the pilot bearing is hung up. And do you know how long it has been since I pulled a cone clutch? I checked with my buddy Dave who owns a Jackson and recently installed a vintage Minnie Molline 4 cylinder in it complete with cone clutch and he had no suggestion either other than parts rusted or worn together.
Good Luck.
Brad
