Classic/Antique Car Repair: 69 camaro 4 speed clutch problem, clutch fork, bar linkage

Question
QUESTION: hi, this morning i took my camaro out, about a mile from the house i noticed the clutch pedal was laying on the floor board and as a result it wasnt working as i tried to shift. im not great at transmissions but am pretty handy with other parts of the car. any idea what i should do?

ANSWER: Danny, I guess that the first thing to do is stick your head up under the dash and make sure that the clevis pin that attaches the clutch pedal arm to the operating shaft has not fallen out. The check the mechanism under the hood to make sure it is all connected. Pick the pedal up off the floor and see of the spring pressure form the return spring can be felt. If all of the linkage is connected then the transmission will have to come out as there could be a problem with the throwout bearing or clutch fork.

QUESTION: brad, got under the car the linkage from the clutch pedal to the fork was laying loose. i can put it back but it keeps falling out after a few shifts. is this arm adjustable to apply more pressure or am i missing a part that broke.

Answer
There is an adjustment on the rod that connects to the clutch fork, the arm that sticks out of the bell housing. But I have a sneaky feeling that what we call the Z bar linkage has popped a weld. The Z bar is the linkage shaft that runs from the chassis of the car to the side of the engine. The rod from the clutch pedal runs to a lever frpm it. Then that shaft rotates and causes another lever to move that pushes the rod against the clutch fork. The welds that hold the two levers have been know to break and allow the levers to twist a bit and that will cause the rod to fall away from the clutch fork. Repair or replace the damaged parts, adjust the clutch and you should be good.
