Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1948 Packard Convertible, southern california area, auto literature

Question
Dick, the above car I just acquired.  The rear had been hit, and poorly repaired.  I intend to repair.  The question is since I have to replace the decklid, the opening, and half of each quarter, does the coupe, or the sedan share the deck lid with the convertible.  Would make finding same easier.  The car I have has the short wheelbase.  120 inch.   Thank you

Answer
Hi, congratulations on your Super 8 Convertible.  Your car is a model 2279, and takes a part number 396653 trunk lid - unfortunately, that number fits only the convertibles for 1948-50, including the Custom 8s, but that isn't much help, because those are scarcer than hen's teeth!

I advise you to get a part book and a shop manual for this car - they are available from the various auto literature dealers - I use Ed Faxon at www.faxonautolit.com, but there are many others.  Shopping for parts for Packards is frustrating, and arming yourself with the right interchange information and the part numbers is a big plus for you.

If you happen to live in the Southern California area, I may be able to help you find what you need - but I cannot ethically do that on this service.  Contact me at DickB@sdccu.net and I will help if I can.

I recently sold my 48 Custom 8 convertible after 32 years - I still miss it - they are wonderful cars!
