Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1959 ford f100 backfiring and missing, 1959 ford f100, 292 y block

Question
I was wondering if you could give me a starting point for trouble shooting
this.

I have a 1959 f100 292 y-block that was running OK until a spark plug wire
melted through on the headers and arched.  After that I had the points
replaced
and timing adjusted.  The car starts and idles well and drives well at low
speeds, but when accelerating quickly it seems to miss and has a flat spot in
acceleration.  I checked the vacuum advance which seems to be working OK.
If I
step on the gas pedal really quickly it back fires in the carberator and stalls.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Answer
There are major and minor possibilities. You could have miss fired and bent a valve. I have seen it happen, but it is rare.

I am leaning more to minor.

First, check the firing order of your wires. This is most probable and most like the symptoms you describe. By check, I mean trace every single wire from beginning to end. Don't take anyones word for it, not even your best mechanic. Check the firing order sequence and make sure it is right.

Next, look inside the distributor cap for a black "ant trail" to one post (or more). A cracked cap would also give you the problems you describe.

Also, make sure you did not jam your PCV valve in one position or the other. Make sure it rattles when you shake it and makes a difference in the engine when you put your finger over it.

Finally, any backfire can funk up a carb, so look down the throttle body and inspect for severe carbon.
