Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1965 Pontiac Grand Prix faulty fuel gauge, pontiac grand prix, gas gauge

Question
I bought a nice clean 1965 Grand Prix early last year and the former owner
said all the gauges were working... except the clock.  Well... the car was
towed from California and made it to S. Fla in one piece.  I drove the car
home from the drop off location and noticed the gas gauge wasn't working
properly.  Since I don't drive the car far... I just keep note of the miles I put
on her.  U want now to repair it and was told it could be the sending unit.
Anyway of knowing what I can do to check it or do I need to go and buy a
new sending unit?

Thanks!

Answer
"IF" the gauge is pegged all the way down...
The first thing I would check is the ground between the gas tank and the sending unit. there is one wire usually black coming from the rear wire loom going to the tank area.

if you can't get to the end of the wire to where it is screwed into the body,
you might tap into the wire and get a good ground.
if the wire moves or jumps thats your fix..
if not write me back and i will help you more good luck
