Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1981 Corvette motor repair, oil leaks, water leaks

I just bought a 1981 Vette.  I drove it home and the motor is now making a loud noise when out of gear and sitting on the passenger side (knocking).  I am not sure if it is a rod, a lifter (sound lower).  No oil leaks, no water leaks, did not over heat.  Does it in gear and out of gear.  Sounds like it is coming near the oil pan.  Anybody have any ideas?

Dee, is the noise speed sensitive? Does it speed up as the engine speed increases? If it does the noise is probably internal. If it is not speed sensitive then look for a rattling exhaust or body part. If it is speed sensitive it is time to get the stethoscope out and start probing different parts of the engine to determine where the noise is coming from.
