Classic/Antique Car Repair: 64 Pontiac Laurentian 6 Cyl, pontiac laurentian, heater core

Question
Hi Tazz
On the subject of this motor overheating.
The thermostat is new,so is the water pump.
I'm not sure what you mean by the heater core being bypassed.
I got a shroud, but it will have to be cut to fit.
It is a solid circular hoop about a foot in height when laid flat.It looks like it totally envelops the fan forcing it to suck air more directly through the rad.
*How do you think I should cut it?
I was thinking cutting it in half which would make it easier to drop behind the rad.Can you think of a better way?
Also, the exhaust is rusty and old-I think its original. The vehicle sat out in a field for years.
*Would this have an effect on overheating?
Its not that noisy but you can smell a bit of exhaust inside the car.
*Also, how should I set the sliding heater controls on the dash to minimize overheating?
Thanks!

Answer
ok, there are 2 hoses on the water system going toward the passenger compartment. They supply the heater with hot water for rider comfort. It was long established that to bypass a leaking heater, you simply disconnect the 2 hoses and put a pipe between them. This will cause nearly every car to heat up.

Blocked exhaust (rats nest, collapsed pipe, etc ) will definitely make your engine overheat, but it will also noticeably reduce your power.

On the shroud, I would not let it extend past midway of the fan. Therefore you would need to cut it depth wise. In putting it on, your usually can just remove the fan, put the shroud in place and then being little contortionist, put the fan back on.
