Classic/Antique Car Repair: vin, skilled mechanic, older models

Question
How do I check the vin on older models with only 11 characters.  I am about to purchas a 1966 mustang and want to make sure it is ok.

Answer
Unfortunately, Carfax and the other history verifying services are not available for vehicles built before the long new type VINs were used.

The local State Patrol office could probably run a check for you to make sure there is no history of being stolen or totaled, and the local DMV might be willing to do this also, for a fee.  The only other thing you can do is take it to a garage you trust and have them inspect the underside of the car very carefully for previous accident damage.  Unfortunately, the way the early Mustangs were built, it is very easy to disguise a bad wreck or a rebuild of a car which has been totalled - but a skilled mechanic should be able to spot the signs.
