Classic/Antique Car Repair: 69 Chevy, cherry bomb mufflers, street avenger carb

QUESTION: My son has a 69 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup with manual transmission. He has a 350 engine that was bored out to a 383. He has a Holley Street Avenger carb. and wants to put some good performance heads and cam on, but wants it to be street legal yet. He doesn't know what to look for and neither do I. I'm hoping that you can give us some advice as to what to buy in way of a cam, heads and some headers that don't burn up the plugs all the time. Any help would be appreciated.

HI I would get a cam that is like a 327 fuely but in hydraulics, not solids. and a set of 327 fuley heads with 202 valves and some h.d. valve springs.or you can go to [SUMMETT RACING..com} and check out [J.C.Whitney.com} for parts of all types. a nice holley with a elect. fuel pump. and alum. intake and headers. than you will have a good street rod.if you  look on the web for 350/383 chevy motors you will find a LOT of shops and new data.

QUESTION: Thanks for the help on that. My son found some at Summit, but they don't have a heat crossover, will that matter? I know that the heads that he has now has the heat crossover, but since he has an electric choke I don't know if it would matter or not. His electric fuel pump is set at 6 lbs, that's what Holley recommended. I haven't looked up a cam yet, still trying to find out on the heads what matters and what doesn't. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi- well as far as the heads I would go with a set or cloned fuley 202 valves with some springs. new rods and a cam and as far as the carb you should go with a alum. hi. rise. intake and a holley 750 dbbl. pumper with mech.  and as far as a heat shield get headders, and if a shield is needed you can buy heat wrap most any place and throw a set of cherry bomb mufflers on it.sceendarys not vacume and do not go any more than a 411 rear due to gas prices.
