Classic/Antique Car Repair: 350 Chevy engine pops/backfires when revving..., 350 chevy engine, camaro z28

Question
Just switched camshaft to a stock one for a stock idle as the one that was in there had a ruff idle and replaced the head gaskets. Timing on camshaft was marked on the chain sprockets and lined back up. The valve lash was set to zero.
We set the cylinder #1 to TDC and the rotor on the distributor was set to point to the cylinder # 1 plug. Car started fine and idle was set to 700.
Started messing with timing, it seemed to run smoothest around 10 degrees advanced. Ran well in beginning on idle then everytime you rev it up it would pop and sometimes the carb would spit gas out.
What could be causing this and what would be the solution to make it run perfectly smooth?

Engine is a 350 year is 1970 with an Edelbrock 600cfm

Also this engine gets real hot, just when starting it up, it didnt even run for a full minute and cylinders #1 and 2's exhaust manifold's pipes were supper hot.  What could be causing this?  We tripple checked all plug wires and all are connected correctly.
Thanks

by the way we put this engine in a 86 Camaro z28 auto trans.

Well I hope the chain and gears are all lined up- it might be  plug wires 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2- your dist. might not be in or off by a tooth. I bet it is that. its poping out the carb. so the cam chain or the dist. is in wrong. check it. pop # 1 and it should be on the tdc line .and with cap off it should be on the no. 1 plug spot. ok.
