Classic/Antique Car Repair: 4BBL Holley Carb. adjusting, chev motor, holley carb

Question
QUESTION: Hi Roger, My 69 chev el camino hesitates and coughs when I give it gas. Is this an excellerator pump adjustment or an idle adjustment or am I not even close? I have a         P/N 0-80457S (electric choke) Holley 4 bbl carb. on a stock 350 chev.motor. Just learning about carbs. (greenie) Your wisdom would be helpful, thank you for your time and interest in helping others. God Bless.

ANSWER: ALBERT;
Hea- well it could be a valve spring or push rod or rocker arm, or valve adj. When was the last tune   up-points-condenser,  rotor,  cap,  wires,  plugs, fuel  filter  ,as far as the choke it could be hanging up on you.  the car might need a adj. turn in the adj. screws one on the right and one on the left. turn it in till it almost stalls than back it out 1 1/2 turns do the same to the left side- this will get you close to a good setting, than one at a time turn it in till it almost stalls than back it out till it sounds its best no more no less do both sides. a holley on the 350 should run good. check the fuel filter (change it)than check the tieing, when doing so remove the vacuumed line from the dist. and plug it so it will not suck air. now with the dist a bit loose set the timing at around 8 tdc and see how it runs, than try it at 10   or 6 what ever it runs its best at. it might just be a simple thing.  ok

QUESTION: Oh Roger, she runs much. Better than I can remember, and I did it all myself, almost. With your help, thanks. I set her up @ 8'tdc, adjusted the carburetor and don't smell gas fumes anymore. My wife said she'll go for a ride now. Women, scared of a little fumes. :o) You mentioned a value spring or lifter or value adjustment as other possible issues. I do hear a tapping sound when I first start-up in the morning. It goes right away. Can I do the adjustment to the lifter myself? And how would I do that. That would be a first for me also. This is much better than auto shop class. I REALLY APPRECIATE YOU TAKING THE TIME TO SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF AUTOMBILES.  :O) Thanks again. Have a great weekend. Go Chev! The Heart Beat of America.

Hi well good for you- as far as the valves if they are hydraulic  you will remove the valve cover one at a time, than  with a socket wrench you will loosen the nut till it clacks than turn it back in 3/4 of a turn no more than one full turn- note the motor will at times sound like it will stall so you must turn in the nut slow try them all at 3/4 of a turn,and you will need new gaskets. but if it only does it  when cold and not when warm I would leave it for now, add a can of  STEP to the oil or get a new oil filter and oil and a can of STEP ok

I'm  so happy for you. if you wanted to you can add a can of lead adative and a can of octaine booster. it will run real good. is your air clener clean, also the p.c.v. valve-it should shake if you take it off and shake it it should rattle, or give it a shot of carb cleaner.  And with that motor you can get away with a set of cherry bomb mufflers, it will pur and when you give it the gas - as it is straight threw loud. also cleans the carbon all out.  you can also put a hotter coil in it. and if the time comes when  you want to put in  more power.   than a cam and a head job.and a alum. intake and a larger carb. wow you will have a street plane. lol. it will not cost as much as you think for all of that stuff. let me know if you ever want to do it ok.
