If your only observing what your shifter is doing inside the cab and its going through the gears it sounds like its  off under the truck.

QUESTION: what am i looking for? i see a cable line sort of low with a piece of square-ish looking metal hanging on it. should that metal holding the cable in place?

Answer
the square bracket should be attached by 2 bolts on your tranny pan so in other words

your shift cable should drop down towards the trans linkage there should be a bracket attached to to trans to hold cable in place then the cable will attach to metal piece about 3 inch long with square slot that is bolted to rod that is squared off at end sticking out of tranny.

Its real simple

Im not sure on how else to guide you with fixing this, What you need to do is get undernieth the truck look at everything and just use commen sence, say ok cable attaches here, and then it should attach here

It should attach to side of tranny , look for that small rod with squared end and hold in end for bolt
