Classic/Antique Car Repair: 66 Vehicle leaks a bit of tranny fluid, ford mustang convertible, ford mustang

Question
QUESTION: Hello,..I'm a NON mechanical guy (Obviously because I'm here asking you the questions) and I just love the classic pre 70 vehicles. I'm interested in one car in particular and the guy said he did notice a small amount of tranny fluid on the floor from the car, but that this was nothing to be alarmed about with a car over 40 years old...(66 Mustang convertible). In general, should I be worried, or should I just bite the bullet and buy this exceptionally clean looking vehicle?
ANSWER: TODD=
Hea well if it is what you are looking for, I would take it for a test drive, go up a steep hill than stop in the center, than take off and see if there is any slipping or knocking sounds if thats good, than go down the hill and at about 25/30 m.p.h. no more than that drop it into low and see if there is any knock or clank, all it should do is try to slow down or hold the car back a bit. that is also good.
than just go on a straight a way in drive and from a 10/15 m.p.h. go slowly up to 55 /60 and if it shifts ok  wih no slipping than thats also good, now for the last thing just get on a hi way and at about 45-50 hit it so the passing gear will mode in, than if all of that is fine I would say you might just have a front tranny seal leak and with a car that old if thats all you got it made. as long as there is no white smoke and it sounds good, get it, buy the way what is the asking price for that FORD, I would never own one but it sounds like it is in god shape.

QUESTION: Thanks for the tip! Yes,..it's a 66 Ford Mustang Convertible with Automatic Transmission and A/C. This car is AMAZINGLY clean! They are asking 16,500.

The other car I'm looking at that has absolutely no leaks, no rips, no rust and is sparkling clean...(nicer looking than the stang) with just a bit of carpet fade... is a '66 Corvair Convertible. It runs REAL strong and is priced at just under 12. The drawback? It doesn't have A/C and I live and sweat in Memphis!!!

Answer
Todd; Hi
well as far as the two I would go with the ford. and as far as the tranny if it is only the seal, it cant cost that much or just check it and add it when needed, as you can even try the stuff they they sell that might help to stop the leak as it does help on some leaks. and at the worst- you can get it built up and have a little pep put into the tranny. .
