Classic/Antique Car Repair: starter removal/replacement 68 ford fairlane, starter removal, light test

Question
i have a 68 ford fairlane, 200, straight-six, automatic. i just returned from a 10 hour round-trip trip, no problems, drove to work the next day, no problems. tried to start the car following day and it will not turn over. the lights in the dash come on. i put in a new battery, still it will not turn over. would the starter be the next place to look? is it something a novice with tool knowledge could repair herself?

Answer
Ok, thanks for reporting back.  I'm glad it wasn't something more expensive.  Save the other information somewhere, because if you are going to be driving old cars, you are going to see this situation again sometime, or some friend of yours will, and you can be a genius and help them get going!  Both of my daughters know all my tricks, and now my grand-daughters are learning them - I'm making a crusade to get folks to fix their own stuff - and making heros out of my kids!

The "dome light test" is a family tradition in our bunch - it has saved many a buck!
