Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1955 chevy 235, spark plug gap, exhaust pipes

Question

-------------------------------------I hate to keep bugging you and I'm not playing with you, but Im having trouble seting the timing,and seeing that black flim comming out of the exhaust pipes when you start the engine, and when you take off it whants to kind of sputter like missing,popping, the 235-6cyl is a powglide 235 with a automatic choke.When u set the timing do u set it when both maks line up tdc? I put some stp in it today like u suggested because of the lead deal,older cars suposed to run with lead gas how does that effect it and what do u do to compensate for no lead in the gas today? I,m going to rebuilt the carburetor I hope that helps. Any suggestions will be appreceated and I,m not playing with u like u said in your last response, I,m just not that good with old cars, Im learing. Do u think I should leave the carburetor with the automatic choke on or change it to a manule carb?

Thanks
Luis

Luis;
HI you should get a book with all the stuff in it. if you go to the library the tech books will have all of that info in it for you.the plugs gap  at .035.    points  at  16-18  and yes  remove the vacume and plug it when you time it.I have to leave you some stuff to look up,thats how I learned it  ok. but it sounds like you got it down good.

Hi well when you set the timming  you set it at  what the specs. call for , I would try yours at 6 *  adv.  you will hear the engine idle up when you do it. if you have it a tdc, no good.  un do the vacume to the dist. and plug the hose. the  mark  on the harmonic bal. should be on the 3rd line above tdc on the  marked plate..  ok and I wonder if you have a bad valve spring or lifter if you have all of that poping.  as far as the gas , they do sell a octaine booster to add to the tank, it will help a bit. the fuel now a days is  low in octaine and it makes older cars run shi-- . have you taken a compression test. I think it is a good idea.  ok
