Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1966 Mustang Sprint 200, mustang sprint, battery cables

Question
The cables are fine.  Also I was wondering when I try to start it before the solenoid buzzes, the voltage regulator on the radiator support makes a sort of clicking noise.  Do I need to replace it and is it also possible that the alternator is fried and I need to replace it?  Thanks.

Answer
All of these things are possible, I cannot sort them out without testing things.   Auto-Zone will diagnose this sort of problem free for you, if you can get it to their store.  You can probably start the engine by using booster cables from another vehicle directly to the starter terminal on the solenoid, with the ground booster cable on the engine block.

I'm sure you know how to test your battery cables, but just as a double check, turn on your headlights and stand where you can see them while someone turns the key to "start" - the headlights should dim a bit, but not go almost out.  If the cables are good, they will just dim a bit. Cables are tricky - this is a sure double check.

The buzzing at the solenoid is almost always a low voltage symptom - and the cause is almost always a poor connection at one of the 4 ends of the two battery cables.

I don't know what is causing the regulator to click, but it could also be a low voltage problem, with the same suspicion as to cause.

Once you get the engine running, you can test the alternator by letting the engine idle while you lift off one battery cable (it doesn't matter which one).  If the engine dies immediately, the alternator is not charging the battery.  If it keeps running, turn on a few accessories - see how much you can turn on before it kills the engine - if you can get the headlights on without killing the engine, the alternator is in great shape.

Let me know what you find, out, OK?
