Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1966 Mustang Sprint 200 Coupe, mustang sprint, starter solenoid

Question
I got a Mustang Sprint 200 on Saturday and it ran fine.  When I went to start it later that day the starter solenoid just made a grinding noise and there was a clicking noise from the alternator voltage regulator on the radiator support.  I just replaced the starter solenoid and it is also making the grinding noise.  What is wrong.

Answer
Most likely, your battery cable ends are dirty, corroded, or loose.  If you have those cheap clamp "temporary" repair ends on the cables - throw them away and get some new cables. Then clean the battery posts, and both ends of both cables, incluiding the things they connect to - all metal parts should be bright and shiny, and paint needs to be gone from the engine block where the negative cable bolts to the engine.    Don't buy parts until you know they are bad - most problems like this are maintenance problems, not part failures.

If this doesn't fix it, write again and we'll go to plan B.
