-----Question-----
What could happen to the engine or carb. if someone put the wrong fuel filters on my dodge dart? the fillter started licking gas I put the old one back on and now my car wont start and smells like gas real bad.PLEASE HELP!!!! I love this car.
-----Answer-----
It can't hurt anything to put the wrong gas filter on a car, the worst that could happen is something could have gotten damaged by the person who put it on, or it could be too small, or have been put on backwards which could limit the quantity of gas available to the engine, which would reduce the power, but the car would still run, and it would not cause a leak.

HOWEVER: if you put the old one back on, and mistakenly put it on backwards, you have probably contaminated the needle valve in the carburetor, which will flood the carburetor and make the car unsafe to drive because of the excess gas.  DON'T try to run it that way - get someone who knows what they are doing to investigate.  If the current filter is on backwards, the carburetor is going to have to be cleaned out.

I already answered this but I guess the all-experts site lost it somehow.

The problem you are having was caused by putting in the dirty old fuel filter and letting the crud from it get into the carburetor. This is making the needle valve stick, which causes lots of liquid gas to flow down into the engine, contaminating the oil.  That is why I said DON'T try to run it - it could be very dangerous and could even explode!

Get someone who knows what they are doing to take the carburetor apart to clean out the needle valve and make sure it is working right, then drain the oil and filter and put in fresh oil BEFORE you try to start it again.

This is not something for the amateur to try to fix - it could be very dangerous!

Answer
No, I don't think so, as long as you are careful to save the gasket between the bowl cover and the fuel bowl on the carburetor.   At most, you would have to buy a carburetor rebuilding kit, although you would probably only use that one part from the kit.
