Hi  I would do a pressure test on the cylds. , also if you have a lot of miles on it ,than it could be a lot of things, cam, lifters, the tim.chain.or the dist. how many miles are on it ?

He- Well do you know what I would do,first with all of those miles you will just be putting good money into bad, so I would pull the motor and do 1 of two things, 1-get a new crate motor, or a new re-built motor, or you could re-build your own engine, and this way you will know what you have and what is in it, and the H.P. too.I mean with all of those miles you will have things breaking down left and right, but with a new or rebuilt motor you should be good to go any place , drive to fla. or calif. etc. I mean it is a lot for you to think about but in the long run it is the best way to go.you could get a nice small v-8 327 or  350  with about 300 horse so you would be good on gas and still have the pep when you need it.I would not start playing with old parts or worn parts and replacing new with bad  parts, etc. you know what I mean. I t will not cost as much as you think for a turn key crate motor  or a re built motor-as long as they come with a warentye. so do some heavy thinking about it ok. Merry Christmas. ...>>><<>>..,.<.
