Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1960 AMC Rambler Starting Problem, electric fuel pump, amc rambler

Question
I have a 1960 AMC Rambler Series 10 with the 196 Straight 6 cylinder OHV engine.  When I bought it, the people before me jimmy-rigged an electric fuel pump to it.  So, I decided to change it back to the original fuel pump.  I got a rebuilt original Carter fuel pump put on.  I then changed out the plugs, wires, rotor, cap and coil.  Then when I went to start it....(refer back to subject line)...it won't start.  It cranks and turns over but will not run on it's own.  I tried resetting the point where the number one cylinder is in the distributor rotation but nothing.  I should also say that the day before replacing the fuel pump the car ran and ran....alright...good enough...ok, it wran like crap but at least it got me to work and back.  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Answer
Mike;
   HI , well a rambler hua, ok   is there a rod or a arm  on the back of the fuel pump ? if not than there it is when you put on a eletc. fuel pump most people take the rod out, so if you have no rod it will never run. with out it. or that could be the reason the eletc . pump was put on it, the cam  lobe  for the pump could be worn out so thats why the eletc. pump was on. can you hook up the eletc. pump and see if it will start up.when you set the points you wat the dist. high sopt  and the points arm to be on the high spot
when you set them  so you set the points ON the high spot so when on the flat spot they will be closed shut.  did you gap all the spark plugs. they do not come gaped in the box as a lot  of people think. check the wires, check for spark to the plugs, but I bet it is the fuel.  or you might have to prime it due to the new pump has no gas in it, so take off the air filter and put about a half of a shot glass of gas in the carb.  than try it. keep all gas away. when doing so. you might have to prime it a few times, if all the rest is good.
