Classic/Antique Car Repair: 72 Nova Coil Springs, upper control arm, 72 nova

Question
The lower ball joint castle nut was torqued to spec after the spring was in.  The 2 sets of springs I have tried came from 2 different aftermarket restoration companys. ( Harmons and Year One )  One set was a half coil shorter than the other but did not make a difference.  The rubber stop is located on the spring perch tower and the upper control arm comes right down onto it, no way to get it in there after the springs are in with this problem.  Should I cut a couple of coils off of the spring or would this cause handling problems?

I have a 72 Nova that was originally a 6 cylinder car in which I have now installed a 350 V8.  I have tried a couple of different sets of front coil springs but with each pair the upper control arm is jammed against the rubber bump stop like there is not enough weight to compress the spring.  I believe I have small block springs installed and I checked the spring alignment in the upper perch and lower control arm.  Is there something else I should look for?

Marc;
do you have a spring compressor ?

Marc
hi- do you have the lower ball join  loose, if so are the springs for the car ? some heavy springs are even shorter than the reg. but they are stronger. I would use  72 nova big block heavy duty / with a/c and auto tranny springs.
can you take the rubber bumper off than replace it after the springs are in ?

Answer
NO NO  do not  cut any thing off the springs it will make them trash. I would  get a set of nova  396 h.d. springs. I wonder if the springs that you have will even fit the nova. do you have the spring compressor that fits up threw where the shock would go. if that will not do it than you have the wrong springs.
