Classic/Antique Car Repair: 51 Studebaker pickup, oil filter cartridge, studebaker driver

Question
We are restoring a Studebaker that has been sitting in a field for 30+yrs. The radiator is shot and needs to be replaced(it can't be fixed) Is there a radiator out there that would fit without alot of modifying? Or is there somewhere to look for a replacement for this original, we've had no luck at all locating one so far. Also, the owners manual says something about a screw cover over an oil filter cartridge, Where is that located on this model. 2 R 5 6volt flathead?

Answer
I don't know of any radiator that will work other than the right one.  Since you say the radiator can't be fixed, I assume you mean that the top or bottom tanks are ruined - because if the tanks are OK, any radiator can be recored and made good as new - just take it to your local radiator shop that has been in business for 20 years or more and ask the man!

The best source for Studebaker parts is SASCO, in South Bend IN - they may have a new one in stock. If they do not, then you need to run an ad in Turning Wheels (you are a member, I hope, of the Studebaker Driver's Club - if you are not, you should be). Someone there will help you for sure.

If the oil filter is on this particular vehicle, it will be easy to spot, as it is a round canister, probably orange in color, on the side of the engine, about 6 inches in diameter, with a lid on top - the lid has a large nut holding it down on in the center of the top.  Most of these trucks did not have an oil filter - that was an extra cost accessory, and the folks who bought pickup trucks in those years were not real big on accessories!
