Classic/Antique Car Repair: Steering column, Park indent., chevy nova, 1963 chevy nova

Question
Hey and Good day.. I have a 1963 chevy nova 2, just aquired. When I attempt to put the car in to park or take it out of park, 2sp auto on the column, I have to grab a screwdriver and spring the lever forward down near where the steering column connects to the steering box. What is it that is broken? Why won't it release when doing it from inside the car. Is there a spring broken in the steering columng somewhere? Down near the steering box there is a spring action that appears to work to keep the lever sprung back into the knotch/catch that keeps the lever in park. Your help is greatly appreciated. thank you

Answer
Barry;
 hi  well  I would start at the linkage  at the tranny and work your way back till you find what is causing it,  it sounds like some part is worn or broken but it could be any place..
I would be carefull with the screwdriver as you might cause more  trouble, I do not think it is in the colum it self.
