Classic/Antique Car Repair: Fuel economy, pontiac laurentian, older cars

Question
Roger
My 64 Pontiac Laurentian 230 straight 6 is working better all the time,thanks in part to your advice.
My biggest beef is how much gas it uses. It has been tuned up,new plugs/points,I have the choke and idle set low,but it is still a pig.
Is that the way these engines were? People assume that because of the small engine and lack of power anything it is economical on gas.

Answer
Barry ;
Hi - good that its running ok.  as far as the gas , back in the 60 s the gas had more lead  and octaine , etc.  as far as the gas now it stinks in older cars , and in the six cyld. its even worse. I would try some gas addative to the tank - it might help it out a lot.
