Classic/Antique Car Repair: Gas smell in cab, fuel pump filter, wet place

Question
I just got a 1969 el camino with a 350 v8 and im smelling gas in the cab when driving I'm just wondering what i should be checking/fixing to stop this problem. Ive heard a few things from other sources suck as loose feul line or dirty carb, any other ideas?

Answer
If you can smell it, you should be able to see a wet place where it is leaking.  Start at the fuel tank and inspect everything with a good flashlight - paying special attention to any stains or washed clean areas - that might be where the gas has been leaking.  Work your way toward the engine - looking at all the fuel lines and the fuel pump, filter and carburetor.  You should be able to find it that way.

No one can guess where it is for you, you'll just have to hunt it down yourself - it could be leaking in any one of a hundred places!  But don't ignore it - it could be very dangerous!
