Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1971 Dodge Challenger Steering column, 1971 dodge challenger, dodge challenger

Question
Hi, my question is about my 1971 Dodge Challenger. This car was bought by my uncle and driven by he and my father until about 1985. Sometime between then and now the keys to the Challenger have been lost making it imposible for me to unlock the steering column to move it into my polebarn to begin the restoration which it deserves. I have been unable so far to figure this out, is there any way to unlock the steering column without the key? If not how do I go about getting a new key?

Answer
Sorry, there is no way to unlock the steering wheel without the key, unless you are willing to damage the steering column by slide-hammering the lock cylinder.

You have a number of options:

You can call any locksmith who makes house calls and have him come out and make a key, or:

You can try using the car's VIN to get the key code information from Chrysler corp.  or:

If you have the original paperwork that came with the car, the key number should be on it.  It is either written on the sales invoice or in the flyleaf of the owner's manual.   or:

Look for the owner's white "certi-card"under the hood, in a black plastic holder alongside the radiator - that has the information that the dealer can use to make a new key. or:

If you can get a door open, take the door lock out of the door and bring it to the locksmith.  He can make an ignition key from that lock as they use the same key- that will save you the house call fee.  or:

My guess is that you'd be best advised to just call a locksmith and be done with it.  You will need to show that you have the title to the car in your name, if the locksmith is following the rules of his trade.
