Classic/Antique Car Repair: oil change, small drain, filter canister

Question
I drained the oil from my 1951 Baby Lincoln but the oil in the
filter container is still full- any suggestions? I tried blowing
150psi into it but to no avail- thanks- Joe

Answer
The oil filter canister has a small drain plug in the bottom which you can remove with a 1/4 inch wrench, or else you can buy a suction pump from your local auto parts place that will suction the old oil out of it. It works sort of like a hand operated tire pump - with a barrel, a hose, and a handle you pull out.  It will take about a pint for each stroke - you have to have a receptacle to discharge it into.  This is easier than using the drain plug, because draining it makes a real mess!

It is important to get all the old oil out, as you will find about 1/2 inch of gritty muck in the bottom of the canister - that needs to be taken out of there.  You will need some solvent like kerosene or diesel fluid it thin it out so you can wipe it out with a rag.
