Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1970 MGB, electric fuel pump, starter solenoid

Question
My 1970 MGB has been running beautifully, however today when
I went to start the car the "red" light went on as usual and the
electric fuel pump started running - then I turned the switch to
start the car and everything stopped.  Now when I try to start the
car the "red" light does not come on and the electric fuel pump
does not register.  I thought I heard something that sounded like
something frying, but I could be wrong on that one.  At any rate
the car will not turn over [the battery is reasonably new and has
been working fine].  Where should I begin as I try to track down
this problem.  Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Charles,
When you lose all power you need to start at the source with a volt meter or test light. Confirm that your battery cables are making good contact by checking between the positive cable and the frame with your test light or volt meter. If that is ok move to the starter solenoid (on the starter) and do the same test between the battery cable and the frame and check to see that the nut is tight. (Be careful not to let the wrench come in contact with any part of the frame or engine. This is where the most common faults are on the MG with the symptoms you have.
Let me know if that is not the problem and I will give you the next step.
