i am asking this for a friend any help would be greatly apprieciated.  he is trying to change the blinker switch and needs to get the collar apart to change the switch. it has tilt and telescope. he's gotten the steering wheel off and the switch out but he cant get the collar that the switch is inside of off to get the new switch back in. thanks a lot

Answer -
The Saginaw tilt/telescope column requires special tools to take apart- there are some very strong springs in there that have to be compressed to release some retainer clips.  He cannot do this without a shop manual and the special tools.  Sorry.

I have made my own tools to do this, but I have machine shop equipment.  I think he needs to take the car to someone with the tools and experience. These are tough columns to take apart.   He'll probably come out cheaper if he can find a replacement column in a wrecking yard and just switches the whole column.

Answer
There are many auto literature dealers who stock the shop manuals.  I use Ed Faxon of Riverside CA - he always has what I need.

Contact him at:(800)458-2734

The manuals also run on eBay all the time - that will be cheaper, by far.

The special tool is no longer available, but by studying the manual he can see what is needed to depress the spring so he can get it apart and back together - that is all I had to go by, and I made the tool out of a piece of thinwalled pipe (EMT) and some bolts and washers.
