Classic/Antique Car Repair: limo voltage, polarity, volts

Question
Hi there,

I'm trying to determine what the voltage was for a limo built in the 30's. I have a siren from a governors car and would like to connect it to see if it still works.  Thanks for your help, Ron

Answer
I can't answer this unless I know the make of car and the year it was made.

I can give you some guidelines, but to be certain, you should give me the information I need to look it up.

If the car was made in the USA, and was made by General Motors, it is probably 6 volt negative ground.   If it was made in the USA by any other company, it will probably be 6 volt, but it may be positive ground.  If the car was made in another country, it may be 12 or even 24 volts, and the ground polarity can be either.  So, tell me as much as you know and I'll try to answer you.
