Classic/Antique Car Repair: 66 mustang VIN number location, number location, highway patrol office

Question
I can't find the VIN tag on my son's 1966 mustang.  I has evidence of some damage to the left fender area where I thought the tag was supposed to be.  Any ideas?

Answer
Open the driver's door and look on the rear facing surface of the open door. There should be a plate permanently affixed to the door with the VIN on it.  If it is not there, you will have to take the car to your local highway patrol office (or whatever they are called in your state).  They have a book which tells where a secret VIN number can be found on any car.  They may not tell you where it is, but they can look at it and tell you what the VIN is.

One caution, many Mustangs have been built up from parts of various other cars, and there may be more than one VIN on the car.  Unless you know the history of this car from new, you may have difficulty with this problem.
