Classic/Antique Car Repair: Reference, british car clubs, south florida area

Question
Howard,

Can you please refer me to a quality shop in the South Florida area for the restoration of a 1974 TR6.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Peter,
Sorry, I left FL a long time ago and don't have any good contacts in FL any more. I have been in middle TN for the last 30 yrs. The best way to pick one in your area is to go to a few local British car shows and look at their work and ask around in the local British car clubs. This way you can see their workmanship and check prices from actual customers. I know one here in Nashville that I can vouch for if you want to have one that far away do it.
Be sure you specify the level of restoration you want. The price will vary from a "Driver" restoration on up to a "Trailer Queen" show car. Some details get expensive like instrument rebuilding and instrument faces and OEM type wire ends on harnesses. Ask about "patch panels" that some use for rust. The less bondo the better. Be sure the restorer has done TR-6s as there are many pitfalls particular to the TR-6 like upper differential mounts etc. Check to see how much working parts are to be replaced or just inspected and only bad wearable parts replaced. These are important and costly questions you must address with whoever you get to do the job.

good luck,
Howard
