Classic/Antique Car Repair: 51 ford f-1, engine rebuilder, northridge ca

Question
I have a 1951 Ford F-1 that needs a new  engine.  I have no experience with engines.

How do I go about buying a new engine for this?

I have a shop that said they could put a new engine if I supplied one for $800, or they could buy and mount a rebuilt engine for $3K.

What would you do in my situation?

Thank you,

Answer
I doubt very much that you will find a new engine for your 55 year old truck - you will probably have to be satisified with a rebuilt engine, either the one you presently have, or another one that has been rebuilt for you.

There are many shops that will take your engine out and rebuild it for you, and the $3000 quote is not unreasonable.  You should check out the shop that will do the rebuilding to make sure that they have a good reputation.  As with most any other complicated procedure, there are all kinds of shortcuts that can be taken in rebuilding an engine - you have to be knowledgeable enough to keep control of the process so that you know what you are getting done, and get a good job.  If you do not have a friend you can trust to advise you, you'd be best advised to take the truck to a professional engine rebuilder with a reputation to protect.  That will be more expensive, but you will have recourse if something goes wrong.

My advice is to join an old car/truck club and go to a few events, keeping an ear open for people in the group who are knowledgable about the mechanics in your local area.  Ask around, you'll find a recommendation for a good shop.

The only rebuilder I know anything about in LA is

Valley Head Service
19340 Londelius Street
Northridge, CA 91324

They are VERY Good, but somewhat expensive.  You can go by their shop and ask them to recommend someone to "R&R" your engine and bring it to them for rebuild.  I have had them do some specialty work for me, and am very pleased with their quality and attention to detail.
