Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1968 Ford Mustang Fuel Level Sensor, fuel level sensor, fuel gauge

Question
I replaced the fuel tank and sending unit in my 1968 Mustang with an aftermarket unit from National Parts Depot and now the fuel gauge does not register correctly.  With 6 gallons left in the tank the gauge indicates empty.  Is there a way to to adjust the sender (besides removing it and bending the float arm)?

Answer
I'm sorry to tell you that there is no way other than take it out and bend and or shorten the float arm so that the arm swings from one limit to the other as the float travels from the top to the bottom of the tank.  At least the fasteners are clean and rust free now!

What they sold you was probably a universal fit sender - the arms are usually too long on those, but they are easy to shorten and adjust - just make an "S" shaped bend in the long segment of the arm if you need to shorten it, and adjust the float drop for the correct depth of your tank.

If you have your old sender and tank, compare the two and make the new arm travel the same arc, and have the same length - that should make the gauge read approximately correct.  "Approximately" is the best you can hope for in this situation.

I'm assuming the replacment tank is identical in dimensions and shape - if not, you'll have to do some engineering yourself to make the float arm travel from top limit to bottom limit as the fuel level changes.

Good luck - drain the tank first!
