Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1955 Plymouth Suburban rear axle type, rear differential, brand new car

Question
I have a 55 Belvedere Suburban whose rear end is worn out. I cannot find out from any one what size or type rear differential my car uses. It has made finding replacement parts impossible. The car is all original with only 67,000 miles. It has the 259 ci polysphere V8 with a 3speed standard transmission.

Answer
Those are great cars - my very first brand new car was a 56 Suburban, with V8, so I know what you have there.

No car with only 67,000 miles has a worn out rear end, so tell me what the symptoms are and maybe I can save you having to replace the whole shootin' match!

To answer your question, though, your car has a differential with a part number of 1566987,1393889, or 1489229, depending on which transmission it has.  The first number is for the 3 speed manual, the second number is for the 3 speed with overdrive, and the last number is for a car with automatic transmission.  The first number also fits 53 to 56 Plymouth, Dodge and Desoto, and 55-56 Chrysler.  It has a 3.73 ratio.

The second number is also used by Dodge, and fits 53 to 56 cars with overdrive.  It has a 4.10 ratio

The third number is shared with Chrysler and Dodge, for 55 and 56.  I don't know the ratio, but I'd guess it's a 3.54.

The axle housing is a 1554997, and is also used by Dodge for 55 and 56.

I can go on and on with these numbers, but this will give you some other cars to check for parts donors.

Tell me why you say it is worn out, and maybe we can save you some money.
