Well, you asked for it!  



GTO stands for Gran Turismo Omologato, which is Italian for Grand Touring -Homologated, a description of a very high performance sports car which has been accepted for use in sanctioned races on particular tracks in Europe.   Pontiac stole that term from Ferrari, when they came out with the first "goat" in 1964.  They applied it to an option package on the compact Tempest.  Later, it became a model of its own.
