Classic/Antique Car Repair: piston slap, push rods, push rod

Question
1955 chevy 265 v8. It was suggested to me that the noise from the lifter area is in fact piston slap. Is this possible and what would I do to correct it.This engine is as I purchased it in 1990.I tried adjusting the lifters, but it did little to correct the problem.

Answer
Hea joe,
if it is piston slap you would have to rebuild the block but it could be a bad lifter or a broken valve spring or a push rod as there are a lot of things that will make a noise like that so you will have to do some checking like the valve springs and push rods etc. how is the spark plug on the clyd. that is making the noise ? if the plug is ok I doubt it is from the piston , but how many miles on the engine ? even a bad plug wire can cause noises so again i would check all things.even a bad fuel pump or fuel pump rod acn make noises. ok
