Classic/Antique Car Repair: Quick gauge question..., mr lacey, backyard mechanic

Question
Mr. Warrington:
Mr. Lacey:
I hope you don't mind my asking you this question...it's about a 1979 Chevrolet El Camino, and I realize that may be a little late for you...but I think this is a pretty easy question:
My El Camino dashboard currently has the light-type gauges...when the oil pressure is low, or when the coolant temperature in the radiator gets too hot, a light comes on to indicate that something is wrong.
I'd like to convert it to the "dial" type of gauges, and I wondered if the conversion would be real complicated.
If I just buy a used "gauge cluster" off eBay or at a junk yard and install it, will it work?  I know I'll have to re-attach the speedometer and odometer cables, of course.  But what about the other gauges?  Can I just plug the existing wires in the new gauges and have them work, or is it more complicated than that?  I'm a decent backyard mechanic, but if I have to rewire anything, then it's probably beyond my ability.
Any suggestions, advice greatly appreciated.
Warm regards,
David Gardner

Answer
HI Dave
I would also change the gauges, but do not get used ones, as far as new ones , they are not that much , I would look at the catalog of ( JC Witneys.com) as they carry everything, tell them I told you to use them, and you will have to put in sending units for mech. gauges so all will have to be changed, no big deal. but get new stuff not someone elses junk.OK
