Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1968 1969 Cheverolet 327 HN engine code, powerglide transmissions, size chevrolet

Question
Hi,

Thank you for volunteering your expertise. I haope you can help
me.

1) which chevy car models offered the HN engine coded 327 v8
in 1968 and 1969?
2) what was it's horsepower?
3) what kind of transmission was it coupled to?
4) are there any visible differences from the 1965 corvette HN
coded 327?

I really appreciate your help!

Thanks
Mike Sauer

Answer
The HN engine was used in the full size Chevrolet car in 1969, it is a 350 (not a 327), and it was supplied with cars using the TH transmission.  The HP was 300, 350, or 370, depending on which compression ratio was used. Probably, with the TH, the HP would have been 300.  Those are gross, not net HPs, as you may know, before 1972.  In todays numbers, the HP would be around 220.

The 65 Corvette HN engine was a 375 HP FI 327 Cu In engine.

The 68 Chevolet HN was a 327 engine, used in full size and Chevy II cars with Powerglide transmissions, but I don't have the HP info on it.

I am not a good source for engine code numbers, particularly with Chevrolet which had so many different variations, even within the same year. If you contact one of the on line groups you'll learn a lot more very quickly.  Be careful, though - as there is no quality control on what people tell you - a lot of the information could be wrong.

The other good source of this type of info is the Chevrolet Number book sold by Cars and Parts Magazine - they are supposed to be pretty well researched.
