Question -
I have an old yellow convertible that I love (Dodge Dart '68) that my husband's father bought when he retired (a romantic gesture) and that he gave us four years later.  For the last 20 years I have been using it only in the summer on the unpaved back roads of our town.  In the last five years it has been stalling a lot, and the wonderful mechanic I use, whom I trust a lot, says it's the gas, which evaporates a bit as it is stored in the winter and then clogs up the works.  He also says there's a lot of glop in the bottom of the gas tank and that I should top it off frequently.  He also says I should drive it fast on the main road to clean it out every week or so. (Unfortunately this isn't feasible in practice.) He cleaned it all out recently and it drove wonderfully for about two weeks, but now it's back to stalling.  Is there anything I can do?  Can I siphon off the gas at the beginning of the summer and put new gas in?  If so, how do I dispose of the old gas?  Is there any way of getting the glop out of the bottom of the gas tank?  Please help.  I want so badly to be able to drive my loved car again.

A Dodge Dart, nice lil car. well with the fuel (gas) we have 2-day its like water in your car, but yes - you can drain the gas off but that would be a little work, but what I would do is to fill it to the top with gas and add 2 or three cans of dry gas and  1 or 2 cans of gas line addative. At the time you are going to put the car away, fill it and add the cans of stuff, also start it at least 2 times a mo. If you can keep it full at all times there will be less space for air , than it will not collect moisture , thus keeping water and stuff out of the fuel. Also try a hotter spark plug,as if you only drive the car on dirt roads you never get a chance to clean it out so I would see if you can get some hotter plugs in it. I would also try to get to a high-way some place that you can get the car to 60 mph. or more so at least you can put the gas to the floor and let the car get up to speed for a min. or so , this way you will be cleaning the carbon out. That is what it needs , but hotter plugs and keeping it tuned will help ,also  with each fill up add a can of STP gas treatment and if you want you can add a can of LEAD addative this will help you too.
I hope I could help you. good luck RJM W

Followup question:

THANK YOU very, very much!  Just a couple of questions:  What do you mean by "2-day"?  And how do I get "hotter" spark plugs?  How do I describe them?  My problem in taking the car out at 60 mph is that I'm afraid something will snap and it'll fall apart.  It has only a strap seat belt, and I'm worried about it.  Also, I don't go on the highway in the course of everyday life, so it would have to be a special trip.  How often do you think I would have to do it?  Thanks a lot! - JM

Answer
Hi
Jane, Well 2-day is just short for (today) or like short hand. And as far as the hotter spark plugs, whoever
does your tune ups can just put in a set of spark plugs
that are one size up .and as far as going out on the road to go 60mph, if you can't ok I would just get some lead addative for gas at a car place and a can of stp gas treatment this will help you a LOT. ok
PS if You can get the car out once a month to go on thr highway it would be good but if not , the lead and stp will help . And a can of STP OIL will help.
good luck  RJM W
